Lectures Notes

Week 7 - 18/02/2022

Observation
  • Paying attention to details. Ask the question, "What do you notice?"
  •  Look , describe , think & connect
  • Learning to attend to viusal contexts more closely than ordinary 'looking' requires and thereby to see things that otherwise might not be seen
Analyse
  • Determining the features suggest and deciding why the artist used such features to convey specific ideas.
  • Evaluate by first looking at the bigger picture
  • Ask probing "who, what, where, when, why and how"
  • Determination of subject matter through naming iconographic elements, e.g., historical event, allegory, mythology, etc
  • Analysis of the principles of design or composition
  • Selection of most distinctive features or characteristics whether line, shape, color, texture, etc.
  • Discussion of how elements or structural system contribute to appearance of image or function
  • Effect of particular medium used
  • Reaction to object or monument

Interpretation
  • Establishing the broader context for this type of art
  • What do you think about what you see?
  • The various elements that constitute interpretation include:
  • a. Main idea, overall meaning of the work.
  • b. Interpretive Statement: Can I express what I think the artwork is about in one sentence?
  • c. Evidence: What evidence inside or outside the artwork supports my interpretation?

INSTRUCTIONS

What is it meant by Visual analyse ?
Visual analysis is a method of understanding art that emphasizes the visual elements of artwork, such as color, line, and texture. In its most basic sense, it's an explanation and description of a visual structure.
It is to provides a better understanding of what the audience is actually looking at and what the artist is trying to convey.

Select a work of design of your choice
1. A 350-word visual analysis, briefly describing and analysing the design principles of the selected design.
2. Create a work of design of your own, inspired/influenced by the one you analysed, or as a reaction to it. 3. A 50-word rationale explaining and defending the decisions made in your design.

Design process:
  • Visual research
  • Idea exploration and description
  • Final outcome in PDF and short rationale
  • Feedback by lecturer
  • Reflection on the project

INTRODUCTION

SilllDA

Figure 1. Introduce to SilllDA ; Instagram ; Artworks

Figure 1.1PAINTING BY SILLLDA, @SIIIIIIIIIIIIII.DA

SilllDA is a Korean born artist who lives in Japan, sophisticated and profile artwork would have me thinking's she been painting for decades. I'm sure she has been , but from the research from online resource that I found out , she only began this series of horror-inspired paintings when her college was shut down in response to the pandemic. Her first instagram post was on August 14th, 2020 and her gorgeous blend of traditional themes and colours paired with a subtle horror aesthetic quickly gained her a massive following including me !

There are many artist who work with horror as their main spot. Nevertheless , SilllDA brings a different suspense and beauty than ever before. The horror that SilllDA recreates is more like a terrifying thrill and dark motives like drawing a fingernail on blackboard , rather than a bloody cruelty. SilllDA's work is characterised by a sensitive and eerie pain that is almost impossible to reach completely.

PAINTING BY SILLLDA, @SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDA

"I often fight terrible loneliness using my personality. Every time I have done this, I’ve thought that maybe I could be my own best friend. Even though there are times when everyone in the world seems to have turned their back on you, I thought that this friend would always be on my side. And so I started doing paintings full of girls who look like me. Well, even though it’s a horror genre, you have to admit there is something quite loving."

"I have a big attraction towards contradictory and conflicting emotions. I can make sure that therese instinctive and unspeakeable feelings exist in everyone."
------- SilllDA

I love how this part reflects to myself , we all defiantly experience emotions that we cannot tell others in our lives. It can be a strong desire for love , resentment towards others , deep and profound thoughts, or maybe terrible loneliness. These are also the emotions that I can feel the most sensibly and instinctively while looking at SilllDA's work. Each one has such a depth of fear and anxiety layered into it that I could spend time dissecting them. There's a creeping movement to them, a despair in the watery eyes, and a gentle probing with damp, raw finger tips, that are something from my worst nightmare.

CHOSEN ARTWORKS

OBSERVATION

Figure 2.1 Observation ; use of complementary colours

SilllDA's art has a distinctly Oriental feel about it but it also can hardly be called Oriental painting. It's not just bold, but the colour scheme is also intense and full of contrast. As regards her preferred palette, she makes use of many primary colours, particularly black, white, blue and red.Even complementary colours such as purple, yellow or yellow-orange in the background has shown.

ANALYSE
Figure 2.2  Analyse ; types of movement

The result of the illustration is a finely balanced act that combines beauty and horror. Her illustration composition are asymmetrical balance in nature, but it is remains balanced and strategic as she create a sense of balance by playing with the size and colour of the elements. Uses a notable visual, the moon in the upper right is balanced and with the spooky fingernail flower in the bottom left. It also creates a sense of movement through the use of repetition and line,  which plays an important role in Silllda's illustration too. At first glance, the eye is directed to the spooky fingers that look like flowers, which start on the left and move to the right as the curving waves and butterflies move.

Figure 2.3  Organic and geometric shapes

Organic and geometric shapes are the main themes in this illustration. The patterns somehow evokes a sense of drama with some excitement and interest in the overall composition of this illustration. Besides, the texture of the background helps to exude a certain feeling or mood, giving the illusion of depth and making this illustration look more realistic.

INTERPRETATION

Figure 2.4  Mix in modern/contemporary with tradition art style ;
"cuckoo and azalea" by Katsushika Hokusai

It seems that SilllDA has estblished her artwork with a definite personality. SilllDA’s artwork has a strong feel for the colours of the Japanese-inspired style and mood. In fact, she was born in Japan , so perhaps that is why there is an almost unconsciously Japanese touch about her work. When I saw SilllDA's artwork, it feels like Nihonga. The Japanese painting art style is known as Ninhonga , they were painted with brushes on silk and paper, mainly using sumi ink and traditional mineral paint that is mostly in bold colours in red, black, white or blue. The features of Japanese painting that I recognised are mostly in bold line with no shading but the stylistic characteristic that has depicting emotion which can tell are really outstanding and prominent.

SilllDA still managed to achieve a kind of modern and traditional way to transform together into her artwork, without losing her aesthetic value with the ability and authenticity to evoke a sense of pleasure for the viewer, consisting of a wide variety of mediums and methods of mixing in both tradition and modern Japanese painting with vibrant and rich colours.

Figure 2.5  Meaning and symbolism of Chrysanthemum

The other main thing that caught my attention is the spooky fingernail flowers that look like chrysanthemums. It was interesting to me that SilllDA drew a flower that resembled chrysanthemums, and I ended up searching for its meaning (dark side) and symbolism. Chrysanthemum is actually an ancient flower and is regarded as a "death" flower, it's believed to protect against evil spirits. This may explain why it is common to see chrysanthemums in graveyards, as they bring bad luck, headaches, and even nightmares.

PROGRESS

Inspired by SilllDA , I want to do something that has something about SilllDA's artwork features too , I conclude few main points that will be :

  • Bold colours but not losing the vibrant colour palette
  • Repetitive patterns & elements that can caught one's eye attention
  • Be creative , and have fun to explore around
Figure 3  Japanese textile patterns ;
kimono japanese textile patterns
  • Japanese floral patterns
  • Japanese animal patterns
  • Japanese patterns inspired by nature
  • Japanese patterns inspired by objects
While exploring for more ideas, I fell in love with the part where the Japan tradition textile art with its stunning beauty and value, especially the Japanese traditional patterns in their Kimonos, which comes in so many different patterns and forms, even has a hidden meaning to it. Most traditional Japanese patterns dates back to the 8th century are inspired by nature, of which the symbolism is very strong in Japanese culture. I decided to use the idea of repetition of different patterns for my final project and I can imagine it will br very challenging this time but enjoyable.

Week 7 - 18/02/2022 - Progress for "Rebloom"

Figure 4.  Gradient Map & Curves tool

source from : pexels

Inspired by SilllDA , I decided to try in bold colours like blue , red and yellow as my main theme colour palette. After that using curves tool too add some dynamic range and customised in the contrast level.

Figure 4.1  Progress ; repeating the patterns

During my own experiments, I enjoyed using the duplicate tool, where the pattern from 1 to 2 , 2 to 4, and then together form a "human face" flower. I arranged it all and then used the liquify tool to create a flower stalk.

Figure 4.2  Others elements for adding the background

I need more patterns around the flowers to add into the background , and here I'm putting them into the same colour palette into the same gradient map tool.

Figure 4.3  Trying in different background colour

At fist I trying to use different background colour, like in gradient or in red colours but end up I still like at first one , how the blue colour can really emphasis more to the flower.

Figure 4.4 Progress composition of the elements

Adding details, texture and touch-up to the background. Besides, I also add some highlight and darkening to some areas to create some contrast.

FINAL OUTCOME  - "Rebloom"

Final outcome in PDF . "Rebloom"

Repetition + Bloom = Rebloom "Bloom for yourself, and if you're not ready to bloom for them, to show them who you really are, then bloom for yourself. Bloom internally. Bloom so much that buds fall from your bones and earth breaks beneath your feet." My main goal for my final project is produce a repetition design, in which I hope that to be able to persuade others to look at my design more than once in order to experience another new emotions, and to draw their attention to it. Enjoy the repeated images and patterns throughout the design , the more you look at it , the different emotions you feel. I use the opposite colours and patterns to create a complementary colours pairs. For instance, red is the warm half of the colour wheel and blue is from the cool half. They are contrasting colours.

REFLECTIONS

Here I come to the last class of the first semester, in the final project I realised about how the power of observation can helps a lot in generate more creative ideas which help in looking more into different perspective and angle of others. Not only in doing research about one artist , but I actually research for few more artist , I really admired how their creativity and unique ideas with their choice of using colour palette , execution , composition and choice of subject matter which is really inspiring to see the techniques and materials artist use that are different than my own. There are too many things that need to be learned and discover as learning takes forever.
