REFLECTIONS
Experience
I have to admit I have gained amount of knowledge in this typography class. From exercises, assignments and experimenting around with different types of software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign and Font Lab). Also, I enjoyed how Mr Vinod gave us the chance to learn through self-learning methods, which allows us to learn at our own pace and encourages us to enhance our problem-solving skills. Although during the first and second week was kinda struggling to understand about what’s the modules going on, what tasks need to be done, how to do it right, what other consideration and assumption that are needed but after several weeks with plenty of practice with different learning techniques and I found
what works well for me. I consider myself more of a visual learner than an
auditory one. It's easier to watch the lecture recordings on YouTube and do
my own research and read more about typography from the website. Overall, It
has been enjoyable to see the progress from the start to the end. I am
patient with what I am doing and gaining something I never had before.
Observation
Through this semester, one of the most common challenges that I observed
within this 14 weeks is about from a question constantly asked by myself. "How
can I improve to make it better?" "Am I on the right track?" Well, from the
previous tasks (for example in the task of font design and text formatting) I
may feel that my works is somehow off but I do not know what goes wrong and
kinda clueless for not sure how to fix them. So, the solution for me to solve this is that to open mindedness in terms of listening to all views and opinions of my lecturer and friends before coming to a conclusion of myself.
Findings
Overall , I find that Typography is just like everything. It is not about more than just the design of the characters /art of lettering
in graphic design but there's many basic rules, study letterforms and
their usage, the style, arrangement or appearance of
typeset matter."You have a lot to learn about Typography." What I have discovered
about myself, as a learner over the term is vast. I find that typography really takes a lot of time to cultivate an eye ,
with countless hours watching tutorials and practicing typography
non-stop.
