Task 3B- Type Design and Communication (Sticker Lettering)
RESEARCH
Lettering is considered an art form, where each letter in a phrase or quote acts as an illustration. Each letter is created with attention to detail and has a unique role within a composition.

We were given a list of celebrations. Each of us may only pick one and no repeats. The festival I ended up choosing is Happy Easter.Although I don't really celebrate Easters but the first thing came to my mind while thinking about Easter is the egg, flowers and bunny. I've seen other western vloggers celebrate Easter with kids and I think I had a lot of good ideas in my head before starting my sketches.

Fig 2.1 About Easter , Week 10 (01/06/2022)

Before with the sketches, I did some background research about Easter in order to understand the celebration and keep in the right track with the task in sticker lettering. There's a few question of what , why and how in my mind and therefore google helps me out to solve all these questions.

What is the story of Easter ?
Easters is the most important Christian festivals. It celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead, three days after he was executed by crucifixion.

What does the Easter Bunny have to do with Jesus?
In summary, the Easter Bunny is not related to Jesus at all. At most, they're both obviously tied to the holiday celebrating the resurrection, and they're both considered symbols of new life, but the links to one another, essentially, end there.

Why do people celebrate Easter with eggs? and why rabbit with hide the eggs?
Eggs brings hope and purity. It is a symbol of fertility and the circle of life. The rabbits usually give birth to a big litter of babies (called kittens), so they became a symbol of new life. Legend has it that the Easter Bunny lays, decorates and hides eggs as they are also a symbol of new life.

INSPIRATION

I also observed how the lettering can be done in a creative way without adding any/too many graphic elements with illustrations, which helps create letter that are full of characters.

Fig 3.2 Final Sketch Sticker Letterings Ideas
Week 11 (08/06/2022)

We were asked to draw at least 5 different sketch options in the sticker lettering. After looking at some ideas from Pinterest and Google, here are my final sketch with different types of ideas. I try to use fewer graphic elements and instead focus more on wording. During the feedback session with Mr. Vinod, I was relieved to get good feedback. Every idea seems to have worked, and could proceed to the next digitisation progress.

DIGITISATION

Week 13 (21/06/2022)

I decided to use a combination of ideas #2 and #3 from the sketches, and added some simple patterns to the letters H, E, A, and R that looked like drawing patterns from the Easter eggs which shown at the right side in Fig 3.5

Week 13 (21/06/2022)

There were minor graphic elements I used into this sticker lettering , there are silhouette of rabbits jumping, sitting and few bunny ears also not forget about Taylor's logo.

COLOUR DEVELOPMENT

Moving on to the colour development, I turn the b&w letters into the shades of red. Mr. Vinod suggested I add shadows and highlights to enhance the sticker font design based on feedback from week 13. Here are some comparisons and close-ups to illustrate the differences before and after adding shadows.

Fig 4.1 Adding Strokes And Background
Week 13 (21/06/2022)
After adding the shading and colour, I went on to the next step and gave the letters a background and stroke, the background was a light pink, and there were two strokes in total, maroon and white. I found that rounded fonts help convey some comfort and softness to the sticker, and in Figure 4.0 I show some progress in changing the corners to make the edges rounder.

Fig 4.3 Adjusting the curves in photoshop
Week 13 (21/06/2022)

Last but not least, after saving the PNG in illustrator, I decided to adjust slightly in Photoshop, the curves tool helps the sticker in control the shadows, highlights and mid tones separately which also helps to changing the brightness and contrast to enhance the sticker and make it more sharpen.

FEEDBACKS
WEEK 11 08/06/2022
Specific Feedback
Consider the cavity spaces in square / cccupied in square.
Utilised and optimised the spacing we have while creating the sticker with the wording
The logo can be change depends with the sticker lettering.
Figured it out the white space to make it balance.
Make the letterings stand out and wording has to be stronger than the graphical elements
The expression can be convey through lettering.

General Feedback
The sketches is proper lettering work.
Idea #2 still have consider with the negative and white space (Suggesting to add some lines).
Its good to know what you are doing just proceed to the next steps, Good job and well done.
During digitisation, the stickers can be improve by adding highlights and shadow.

REFLECTIONS

EXPERIENCE
Came to the end of this semester, surprisingly task 3B was a lot more easier and the progress development was smoother than the others task before. The sketches part are one my favourite during this task, where it seems like freedom be given, the letters can be transform around and can be added some graphical elements, most importantly we were allowed to use colours !

OBSERVATION
Observe about a knowledge of typography helps the designer more effectively create and convey a message.Having a knowledge of letterforms is part of the toolbox. Without that knowledge, it will be a lot harder to make effective communication.

FINDINGS

Find that typography just like many other elements of graphic design, typography is about setting the right tone, finding the right personality.Finding the right personality, setting the right tone, is essential to any type of communication. In the visual sphere, the typeface selection is an essential part of this process.

Week 13 (23/06/2022)

The Designer’s Dictionary of Type stands more as a visual reference guide to typography than something more practical and hands-on like Better Web Typography, but what it brings in an understanding of some of the classics of the typeface world is super valuable. This book is more of a reference for when you’re feeling a little more confident with type and can take inspiration from the examples and apply them to the next project.
