During the period from week 9 to week 14, our team made significant progress in various aspects of the Duck Academia project. From initial sketches to prototyping and finalizing, we worked together to bring our ideas to life. In the following section, I will document the progress made by each team member :

Duckie Characters

Fig 2.1 Duck Characters - Final proposal

During our research on Taylor's University fun facts, we stumbled upon an adorable duck character that represented Taylor's. Siew Weng was inspired by this discovery and decided to incorporate it into our game. She rough sketched the duck character and included it in our final proposal, adding with the colour code about the duck , it mostly into soft pastel theme.

Sketches

Fig 3.0 Sketch with the idea from the figure toy

This is the most important part where we worked on creating the duck characters that are the heart of the board game. The design team, Wei Jie and Jia Hsuan started by sketching different ideas, including ducks and people dressed as ducks where she got the idea from figure toys. However, we give the comment on maybe we could expand more into Siew Weng idea more onto duckies character

Fig 3.1 Duck Academia Sketch Characters

This time, the sketches and designs of the duck characters captured exactly what we were aiming for. I adore the adorable big heads and chubby bodies, which remind me of  Disney Tsum Tsum characters. But ya ! we love how it turns out and able to move on to colouring stage

Colouring & Refining

 (with outline)

During our team discussion, Wei Jie listened to Siew Weng's feedback and made changes to the duck character. Siew Weng suggested for remove unnecessary accessories, which made the characters look better and easier to illustrate . We also had a vote to decide which colours to use for the duck characters. Lastly, we talked about not adding outlines to the characters, which gave them a clean and personality  look. Gradually and slowly we able to saw the characters taking shape and becoming more what we are looking for. Each character have its own unique traits and characteristic.

Wei Jie and Siew Weng both did a good job colouring and refining the duck characters. While Wei Jie initially struggled with adjusting the details, Siew Weng stepped in and provided guidance to help her improve. Siew Weng's refined versions of the characters were incredibly helpful in designing the game cards, allowing us to incorporate our chosen characters seamlessly. Each character was given a unique color theme, and I must say, the results were WOWzers ! The colours really suited the characters perfectly and made them visually appealing. I couldn't help but admire how eye-catching they look in their own way :.)

Card Design

During design the card process , we were struggled what to put as the back cover of the card , I was simply zoom in the face of duck and show to Siew Weng and eventually her brain got the idea to put as the back cover of the card so we have settled the problem eventually. Siew Weng also prepared for us a template where we could do the characters illustration and paste into the card template and always reminded that to Set in CYMK for avoid printing issues :

I took charge of in Avril character , a cute and soft pinky girly ducky. We also had the opportunity to add other characters to the event cards if they were relevant to the scene. Surprisingly, I managed to complete 19 event cards within just one and a half week, which I consider quite an achievement. During our meetings, we had the chance to review and appreciate the designs created by other team members. I must say, everyone put their best efforts into their work, and the overall quality of the designs was impressive. It was great to see everyone giving their all in this project.

Game Board

Jia Hsuan and Wei Jie took on the responsibility of designing the game board. They divided the tasks, with Wei Jie working on the middle scene and Jia Hsuan  focusing on the outer round background. During the process, Ser Yeet mentioned that the background reminded her of a Yoga Mat??, so we they to reduce the illustration in that outer area. This adjustment ended up improving the overall look of the game board. As a team, we also had a voting session to choose between option A and option B for the final game board design, ensuring everyone's input was considered.

Packaging

Fig 7.1 Final Packaging Box Material

For the box packaging part, we decided to use a transparent type of sticker material. This choice perfectly complemented the woody theme of our game components. The combination of the transparent stickers and the wooden-themed components created a cohesive and visually appealing result. It felt like we were so close to reaching the end of our project, and the satisfaction of seeing everything come together was truly rewarding

Sticker

Sticker was actually a Plan B for the additional touch packaging idea, just in case if Plan A do no work we can more Plan B and C to back up it. I propose my idea of sticker for Jia Hsuan and Siew Weng , they understand and love it. Thefore I manage to proceed and done it within 1 day :,) Doing the cutline is quite struggle for me , all the messy lines which look extra complicated but oh well still managed to learn it as an additional skill for future ?

Standee

Fig 9.1 Overall Standee Character Prototype

Doing the prototype of the standee was my sudden idea , thinking it might help us better explain our concept during the feedback session with Ms Anis. The standee mockup served as a visual representation, allowing group member to grasp the idea of having a transparent standee and understand how it would look in the final version. It proved to be a useful tool for conveying our vision and generating discussions about the game's visual presentation.

We successfully placed an order from China, and fortunately, the standees arrived just in time for our presentation. The quality of the standees exceeded our expectations, and they looked absolutely stunning. One of the most satisfying moments was peeling off the protective plastic to reveal the pristine appearance of the standees. It added a touch of excitement and made us even more eager to showcase our game.

RuleBook

Fig 10.0 Simplified Rulebook - Duck Academia

Ser Yeet manage to do well in simplify the rulebook by taking the reference from Malaysian Dream and categorize it into 7 categories :
  1. Front Page (Logo & Board Game Name)

  2. Game Components

  1. How To Play

  1. Take Note!

  1. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Table Setup

  1. How to Win

Fig 10.1 Changes made in Rulebook (Sizes)

Ser Yeet and I took on the responsibility of creating the rulebook for the game. Ser Yeet focused on simplifying the rules, making them more accessible and easy to understand. On the other hand, I took charge of the rulebook's layout, selecting the appropriate fonts and colors to enhance readability and visual appeal. Throughout the process, Siew Weng provided valuable input and helped in finalizing the rulebook. There were instances where we needed to make changes or add additional pages to ensure that all necessary information was included. The rulebook have been changed from A4 size , A5 size and finally to B6 Size which was inspired by my muji notebook size , we find it that the size is not too big or small just Ngam ngam ho

Fig 10.3 A4 Size Version Rulebook - Duck Academia

The first version of the rulebook in A4 size was quite challenging. I had to spend some time in thinking about the colours, fonts, and font sizes to make it look just right. The front cover was especially tricky as I wanted to arrange the duck characters in a nice and neat way. It took a while, but I'm happy with how it turned out in the end.

Fig 10.4  Rulebook Prototype - Duck Academia

At the end I decided to choose this layout as the front cover, where all duck characters are emphasis in the middle and even small little character like toti , bear bear , planty and buku teks were included inside the front cover.

Fig 10.5 A5 Size Version Rulebook - Duck Academia

In A5 size, we have made changes in adding "About Duck Academia" and our own illustration instead using other not relevant illustration into duck academia which looks getting better and better. We're almost there !

Fig 10.6 B6 Size Final Version Rulebook - Duck Academia

After some revisions and with the help of Siew Weng's valuable input, we decided to switch to a B6 size for the rulebook. It made the overall design even better. We made some adjustments, such as shortening the "About Duck Academia" section, adding more information about the game components, and tweaking the layout to make it more visually appealing. With these changes in place, we were finally satisfied and considered it as the final version. Siew Weng helps in doing a flipbook where it turns out super amazing.

Reflection

Thank You Duck Academia , Thank You Quackiess

Being part of this group assignment and working on Duck Academia has changed me in unexpected ways. I used to be quite shy and reserved, but now I find myself more open and "talkative" ? which is a good sign. I do find it myself enjoy working with as a group now unlike I used to prefer individual and to stay in my own little space. We have spent a lot of time together in x-space and Siew Weng's dorm, sharing moments of relaxation and tons of nice meals to destress because "we deserve it" . While to be honest, sometimes I will doubt my contributions to the team, I do see myself as a listener and always strive to do all my best in every task assigned to me. I try to be versatile and help out in different areas, and I offer my best ideas and suggestions for Duck Academia. One of the most incredible aspects of this journey is witnessing the transformation of our concepts into reality. From proposal , simple "beautiful" rough sketches and TONS of discussions, we have brought Duck Academia to real life, developing a fully-fledged game that we can proudly call our own. It's an indescribable feeling of accomplishment and gratitude to see our ideas materialize and evolve into something tangible. Working on Duck Academia not only taught me about game development but also about teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow as an individual. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my team for their support, creativity, and dedication. I did not expect that we able to achieve from more than that , rather than just staying as assignment purpose but we managed to do well and able to bring lots of memories to us and also to freshmen in the future. Without them, Duck Academia would not have been possible. It has been an unforgettable experience, and I hope they will do all their best in the future too.
