Project 1 - Table Top Proposal

Week 1 - 06/04/2023

Fig 1.0 Week 1 - Task Allocation

During the first week of our table top game project, we formed a group and followed the usual process of creating a WhatsApp group and opening a Google Docs for brainstorming ideas. Then, we divided tasks for our ideation stage, and I was assigned to research about interesting board games, particularly the Monopoly game. Meanwhile, Siew Weng took the initiative to create a Google Sheets for task allocation, ensuring that we stay organized throughout the process.

1. Ideation

At first, we came up with 2 ideas for our board game :

#Ideation 1 :
Taylor’s Edition Monopoly
(Monopoly + Malaysian Dream + Louis Vuitton’s Playable SS23 Show Invite)

@ The combination of the concepts of monopoly, Malaysian dream, and Louis Vuitton’s Playable SS23 Show Invite. We take Monopoly as a reference for the game concept and Malaysian Dream as a reference for the game experience. Since the design of the game, Malaysian Dream has been all about Malaysian fun facts and social lifestyle, we had come to an idea to take it as reference and create a Taylor version that was about Taylorians fun facts, memes, etc. In addition, we came up with an idea to take the pop-up structure design concepts of Louis Vuitton’s Playable SS23 Show Invite into our Taylor’s Edition Monopoly.

#Ideation 2 :
Taylor’s Edition Mafia Game; in chinese “狼人杀”
(Mafia Game + Malaysian Dream + UNO)

@ We are all villagers in Taylor Duck Village, and a tragic duck killing case occurred in Taylor Duck Village on this day! The head duck was the only witness, but the killer had escaped. In order to find the murderer, the head duck decides to organize a duck passing game, inviting the ducks from Taylor's village to work together to solve the mystery.

2. Miro-board

Our group use Miro-board as a platform to visually brainstorm and share visual ideas for our board game project. We have weekly updates where we can see everyone's contribution and get an overview of our progress.

3. Board game cafe visit

Week 2 - 13/04/2023

Experience :
Week 2 was a productive one and our group was determined to move at lightning speed. We planned a visit to a board game store to gather more ideas with different gameplays. I even edited and post a timelapse of our reactions while playing the Malaysian Dream game. Initially, we were clueless and felt lost without any direction, even with the rule book. So, we resorted to watching YouTube tutorials to quickly figure out how to play. As we got the hang of the game, our laughter grew louder and louder, replacing the serious faces we had earlier. The action cards in the game were a hit with us as they allowed us to personalize and make the game more fun with our own rules. The illustrations on the game cards were also a standout feature as they were cute and captured the essence of Malaysia perfectly. In the end, we all had a blast playing the game together! After trying these game cards, we decided to write and document about our reviews and experience into these game where it could helps in brainstorm and apply to our board game ideas, below here are the screengrab about my experience in playing Malaysian Dream Game and Monpoly game.

After the board game cafe, we had a meeting on Tuesday night where we have to spilt task to focus onto the ideation part, I was one of the members in-charge in doing the fun fact interpretation part about Taylor's university. Below are the document and some interesting fact about Taylor's University :

I really liked how our group got together to discuss and finalize our ideas for the university-themed board game. This is where we have to brainstorm to moving to the initial game play of "Duck Academia" Honestly, it was a bit of a headache, but we got through it together! Even Patrick decided to join our group discussion too yayy !

5. Play Test & Preparation Proposal

Week 5 - 04/05/2023

Fig 3.0 Preparation for the very first play test

During week 5 , we started with our very first plat test in campus. We started off by designing and cutting out the board layout which was done by professional Jia Hsuan. Ser Yeet and Ember were in charge in making the paper dice and sketch for the ducky characters. When we began our very first test play and we decided to make some cute yet funny characters that made from clay.

While me and Siew Weng and were in charge in scenario cards,  But, to be honest, we kinda struggled at first trying to write everything down manually. We were like, "this is taking forever, there has to be a faster way to do this!" So, we put our heads together and decided to just type everything up and print it out instead. And so it really made things so much easier and faster for us !!

Under the game card there's scenario card , bucket list card deck , dream card and wild card with a total of 69 cards :

Trying out the game for the first time was so much fun and full of laughter. It felt fresh and exciting, and I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was . It's definitely a great start for our game!

Fig 3.4 Week 5 Task Allocation

After playing the game, we gathered to discuss our final proposal slides. We split the tasks and worked on inserting information into the Canva slides to create our presentation. My responsibility was to research and include references to existing games like Monopoly Game and Malaysian Dream.

6. "Rough" Sketches

Fig 3.5 Board Concepts and Game Components about Duck Academia

We also constantly reminded by Mother Anis where to keep it as ugly as possible for the sketches and visual part however, Siew Weng do have her own reason to keep it as beautiful yet simple as possible , I do support her side and point where we hope and wanted Duck Academia to have amazing visuals that really bring our concept to life and make it easier to understand.

Reflection

Reflecting back about our project 1 within this week 1 to 5 of our game studies, we embarked on the up and down journey of creating Duck Academia. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, from the initial brainstorming of ideas to the intense game card scenario creation and extensive research for visual references. I'll be honest, there were moments when I felt scared and uncertain. It was like stepping into the unknown, not knowing what the next stage would bring. But, boy, did we surprise ourselves! As a team, we worked tirelessly and supported each other, and in the end, we successfully completed the first stage of our project proposal. I couldn't be prouder of our team. We overcame challenges, pushed through our fears, and came out on top. It's amazing how we were able to turn our initial doubts into confidence and create something truly special with Duck Academia. This experience has taught me the power of teamwork, resilience, and the joy of seeing our ideas come to life. I can't wait to see what the next stages of our game development journey will bring , so let's keep going !
