FINAL PROJECT : STOP MOTION

Small recap :
I still remember Mr Martin asking us whether we were interested in Visual Effects or Stop Motion for our final project in the first week. Without hesitation, I answered that I would do visual effect (because I felt that I would do well in visual effect), but during the proposal stage I was lost, I did not know what the idea / plan should be or what kind of story I should go for, after searching through YouTube for some inspiration, I immediately got some nice ideas in doing stop motion and at that point I decided to do stop motion for my final. As we were also having class about stop motion filming exercises, I decided to join stop motion group and experiment on how we could start and film our stop motion using clay:
PROPOSAL :
Inside the google docs, it include all the stop motion working title , synopsis , visual references and storyboard with the shot list as well. The planning part does helps the stop motion project flow smoother and below I will show the progress and few of my errors and trials.
INSPIRATION & IDEAS:
Fig 2.0 Stop Motion Idea #1 , Week 8 (17/10/2022) |
I love how this stop motion is simple and easy to understand the story, I used this stop motion as a reference for me to practice the final project, which will show in below (at the trials and errors)

Next, I enjoyed how this stop motion able to blend well with the music , it is really interesting to watch and really loved the outcome especially the intro and the pac man part.
STORYBOARD :

About the "alive gummy bear?"story :

They were playing around with the toys, stationery, and a laptop game, but they did not realize how much of a mess they were making and how much damage they had done.

SETTING :
Fig 4.1 Props Preparation / Behind the scene #2 , Week 10 (31/10/2022) |
- Props : 2 Packet of Haribo gummy bears , yarn , string , random toys and white cloth
- Setting : Bedroom and Table
- Equipments : Tripod , Phone Camera , Table Light
I began by preparing a few props like toys, glass bottles, yarn, and the main characters --- the gummy bears. It was quite hard to find gummy bear in my area, but in the end, it was glad that I managed to bought the last 2 packets at the grocery store. Furthermore, I decided to film my room, since in my storyboard I mention the gummy bears I bought and the setting will be in my room.
PROGRESS :
Stop motion apps
Fig 5.0 Stop Motion Maker App , Week 10 (31/10/2022) |
After looking few sample and tutorials in youtube, there are some Youtuber recommended using this stop motion app and I do find it useful with the features they have inside this app, but there are still minor "flaws" as there are not very clear when I export them it out.
Apps : Stop Motion
Camera : Iphone 12 camera
Stop motion trials & Erros

In this time, I decided to experiment it to make the result look more "lively" in the stop motion by zooming in first then moving around with different angles, which turns out to be my favourite way to make the stop motion more interesting. I really like how it turns out, because it makes it more interesting and not too boring to watch.
At this point, I realized how important lighting was too ,although I shot during the early morning with a good amount of sunlight, but sadly, the result was still not what I wanted. By adding another light that I have, I began to reshoot for another time. If the light did not work, I went back to plan B by adjusting it inside Adobe Premiere Pro

Intro captured in total 73 shots
Story captured in total 180 shots
Ending captured in total 113 shots
= 366 shots
Taking the intro and ending scene, I didn't expect that there would be quite a bit of a challenge in there, and it also requires a lot of patience, but the story scene was really fun and I enjoyed it most when I clicked "play" and was able to see how it turned out. As soon as the stop motion apps are finished, Premiere Pro is used to edit them.
Editing Progress in PR
Fig 7.0 Adjustment Layer , Week 11 (07/11/2022) |
In the story, the glitching computer was needed in the last scene when two naughty gummy bears played with the laptop keyboard. I searched for tutorials on how to layer mask it. Lastly, I also use adjustment layer to adjust the brightness and contrast also adding some colours to the stop motion.
Fig 7.2 Add Sound effect , Week 11 (07/11/2022) |
Sound effect are also one of the important keys in this stop motion video which could in emphasis some of the scene and helps in deliver information. I added a few sound effects and background music show in below :
Fig 7.3 Sound effect used , Week 11 (07/11/2022)
- Funny background sound
- Typing Keyboard sound effect
- Car door opened sound effect
- Drop object sound effect
- Candy wrapper / packaging sound effect
- Investigations by Kevin Macleod , background music
FINAL OUTCOME : STOP MOTION
" Alive Gummy Bear ?" - Stop motion by Tan Pei Yun
Hey ! can you imagine what gummy bears would be like if they were alive? and when they are free from the candy packaging, what kind of freedom do they want?
REFLECTION
Finally I able to make it to week 14, this final project was fun but challenging at same time, but more into testing my patient level. It requires a lot of details especially in the intro and outro scene, I enjoyed doing this assignment quite a lot even though it is quite time-consuming. In this assignment, I was able to apply so many things we have learnt in this module, from the planning of storyboard, composition and framing, art direction, all the way to sound production which makes me realised that we have really learnt so much throughout all these weeks. I also do enjoyed the process of doing this final project that are involved intensive thinking, creating storyboard, brainstorming ideas, filming and lastly into editing. I love the satisfied feeling when it comes to clicking "play" button in the stop motion apps where I could look overall how it turns out. In overall through this module and project, I able to learn the importance of element such as lightning , composition and props are really important and useful to this project. One small little details can makes it different and appealing to the video.I'm quite satisfied with the outcome of my final project becasue it turned out exactly how I visualised it to be when I have decided on this topic about fast fashion. I can't wait to try shooting more stop motion videos during the semester break.
