Task 3 - Type Exploration and
Application
Instructions
TASK 3 - Final Project
Type Exploration & Application
1. Create a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation. End result: a complete typeface generated (.ttf) + applications.
Or
2. Explore the use of typeface in your area of interest, understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the existing typeface. End result: a complete typeface generated (.ttf) + applications.
Or
3. Experiment. For your idea to qualify as an experiment it must be novel and unique — working with material that might be 3-dimensional, digitally augmented, edible, unusual, typographic music video or fine art. End result: defined by student.
Proposal / Ideas
Fig x Proposal Slides for Task 3, week 11 (09/11/2022)
Summary of proposal slide ideas :
- Idea 1 : Create a typeface that can be used & promote sign language
- Idea 2 : Re-design font for a magazine brand - popeye
- Idea 3 : Design a typeface from hand-drawn pop signage
During the stage of presenting ideas in week 11, I wasn't sure which ideas should I go (Idea 1 & 2) , I can already imagine idea 1 may seems fun but really challenging and tough when illustrate the shape of the hand gesture. So in the end, after having some suggestion from lecture and friends, I decided to choose idea 2 and begin with some background research about background of the popeye magazine brand and type of font style that I would like to recreate.
Final Chosen : Idea #2

1. Visual Research & Exploration :

|
Fig 1.1 About City Boy Fashion style , Week 11 (09/11/2022)
|
|
Some summary about popeye magazine brand is about a monthly fashion and men's magazine based in Japan , the magazine usually feature articles about men's fashion and mostly into a "city boy" style, and it always mentioned in the cover of the magazine title. Well , so what's the city boy style actually ?
City Boy fashion is like a mash-up of Japanese leisurewear and American streetwear, with aspects such as military uniforms, tooling, and even functionalities included to create a diverse look. The overall tone of the match is characterised by mixed and stacked wear.
The magazine's early years were spent scouring California for surf and skate fashion, before pivoting to 'American casual' and 'traditional British' before getting back to Japanese labels. Eventually, Japan's fusion of American and European fashion trends became Ametora, which Romanizes to 'American traditional.'

Fig 1.2 Comparison between both style of men magazine , Week 11 (09/11/2022)
|
|
|
One thing I noticed about Popeye magazine have an unique characteristics / personality is that, usually men / western magazine are more focused toward to topics such as cars, sports and alcohol, but
this Japanese men’s magazines are more focused on a sense of self-reliance through style and aesthetics that establish ideal conditions for young men in which they can express their individuality and dress fashionably for their own benefit first, which is why at the end, I really interested to give them a "make over" to their brand and the idea is to design a funky or a graffiti font that will fits the Popeye Magazine.
Inspiration & Ideas :
 |
Fig 2.0 Inspiration from Pinterest , Week 11 (09/11/2022)
|
While looking for some inspiration about graffiti type, there's few similar style caught my attention. Scrolling through and understand from online resources, the type I'm really interested it is called throw up graffiti where it used to describe as a tag-like drawings of bubble letters designed for quick execution of graffiti words. Characteristics of a basic throw up include wide rounded letters, zero negative space on the insides as well as one to two colours or jus the outline.
Sketches
 |
Fig 3.0 Popeye original logo & rough sketches progress, Week 11 (09/11/2022) |
The original logo of Popeye magazine are more into bubbly and rounded type, therefore I try to recreate a font that is still remain the style (bubbly) but slightly into graffiti style. Below are some progress of the sketch :
 |
Fig 3.1 Progress in Procreate , Week 11 (09/11/2022) |
In overall, I spent around 3 hours in sketching and keep checking the curve and how is it looks. The hardest and challenging is to make sure the consistency, hopefully I will be done great when moving to digitize and putting them into font lab.

Digitization
 |
Fig 4.0 Progress of digitization in illustrator, Week 12 (16/11/2022)
|
In illustrator, I try doing in stroke first and changing them into black fill and add some shadow to look how it turn outs, but of course during this stage there are some failure and mistake happened : Failures and improvement :
 |
Fig 4.1 Founded few mistakes of the letters , Week 12 (16/11/2022) |
When I try putting few of the letters into font lab , I noticed that the white stroke are also included when I paste them into font lab. Somehow the stroke are also slightly thinner which could affect the readability. Luckily I noticed it fast and able to divide and delete and stroke before I paste it again to font lab.
 |
Fig 4.2 Guideline in Illustrator , |
I followed tutorial videos provided by Mr Vinod where using the guideline for the letters before pasting them into Font Lab.
Fig 4.3 Final Digitize Letters, Numbers and Symbol in JPEG, Week 12 (16/11/2022) |
Generally, I was very pleased with how the font turned out. Instead of the strong graffiti look that you usually see by the street wall, the font looks more bubbly just like the original Popeye font.

When I pasted the letters into font lab, I found that some of them were stacked together, so I used the kerning tool in font lab to correct this.
 |
Fig 4.6 Uppercase Letters in Font Lab, Week 12 (16/11/2022) |
In order to see how the font looks in font lab, I typed all uppercase letters as well as some words and sentences:
 |

TASK 3 - Type Application |
Fig 6.0 Popeye Merchandise, Week 13 (23/11/2022) |
As I moved on to the next task, I did notice that Popeye had also recently released their own merchandise. The overall design of their merchandise is straightforward and minimalistic. There are a few ideas that I would like to try out:
 |
Fig 6.1 Idea 1, 2 and 3 for Application , Week 13 (23/11/2022) |
- Idea #1 - Pop-up event for Popeye magazine brand to promote the merchandise and the brand
- Idea #2 - Collaboration merchandise product with Popeye the sailor man (Popeye magazine x Popeye the sailor man)
- Idea #3 - Recreate the Popeye magazine front cover

Fig 6.2 Mood-board - Week 13 (23/11/2022)
 | Fig 6.3 Earth tone colour palette - Week 13 (23/11/2022) |
|
Initially, I created a mood board so I could brainstorm some ideas with a set of colour palettes. It appears that the city boy style is more into earthy tones, such as dark / light brown, dark green, and blue. Progress in application :
 |
Fig 6.4 Progress in Photoshop , Week 13 (23/11/2022) |
The most of the applications I have done use a mix of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, so far I've redesigned the Popeye logo , merchandise such as T-shirts, canvas tote bag, jacket, magazine cover, skateboard, and also some packaging. Here are some examples of my progress:
1. Popeye Logo

 |
Fig 6.6 Few options for Popeye Logo , Week 13 (23/11/2022)
|
To begin with, I did a few options where I could proceed to other applications and use them in other merchandise as well. Additionally, I added a drawing of a city boy holding a book with an eye that could symbolizes Popeye.
 |
Fig 6.7 Popeye Logo Progress in Photoshop, Week 13 (23/11/2022)
My next step was to apply them to the poster and the singnage light box with the logo. This poster is an introduction to the Popeye magazine brand since I plan to use and do an event similar to a pop-up, so it demonstrates the effect of tearing by way of tearing away a part that will "pop up" the Popeye logo. |

|
Fig 7.1 Popeye Magazine Front Cover , Week 13 (23/11/2022) |
The most important of this task is to recreate the front cover of the Popeye Magazine. I have looked through quite amount of the original popeye magazine front cover. The style I would like to try is the graffiti and stylish without losing it the minimalist.
 |
Fig 7.2 Adjust the Layer Style, Week 13 (23/11/2022)
|
To make it more appealing for the popeye title , I add the contour in bevel and emboss at the layer and style section in photoshop. Below are the outcome :

3. Pop-up Event Poster
 |
Fig 7.5 Popeye Poster Progress in Photoshop, Week 13 (23/11/2022)
|
Since the idea is to promote the popeye magazine brand, the pop up event is where people are able to come and attend and shop for all the merchandise. Font used : Gill Sans - Bold Italic & Baskerville - Sans Serif

|
In order to make it more interesting, I added packaging to it in order to make it more appealing. Originally, the images were taken from a magazine that was published by Popeye. Due to the fact that I was not able to get the original images in JPG format, I tried to screenshot them as clear as I could.

6. Merchandise Baseball Jacket & T-Shirt
 |
Fig 8.3 Popeye Jacket Progress in Photoshop, Week 13 (23/11/2022)
|
I think baseball jacket could be best to represent the style of Japanese leisurewear with American streetwear. I changed the colour to an earthy tone brown as well and there's also some embroidery patchwork element on the top of the jacket.
 |
Fig 8.4 Popeye T-shirt Progress in Photoshop, Week 13 (23/11/2022)
|
Beside doing baseball jacket, I also did another T-shirt for Popeye brand as well, although they have released their own version of tee , but still I would like to recreate the style of mine for them. Below are both overall how it turns out :

7. Canvas Tote-bag
Fig 8.7 Popeye T-shirt Progress in Photoshop, Week 13 (23/11/2022)
|
Following the design of the t-shirt, it was necessary to design a tote bag as well, and with the same design I decided to apply to the tote bag as well, below you will see the realistic result:
 |

8. Skateboard
 |
Fig 9.1 Popeye Skateboard Pattern Design , Week 13 (23/11/2022) |
Skateboard could be the best to represent about city boy , how can I not design about skateboard ? So for the skateboard design, I came up with few different patterns where I could apply to the front and back of the skateboard.
 |

Reflection
Experience
Through this task, I gained experience and gained an understanding of a brand I really enjoy, which are related to both fashion and magazines. Although during the slides proposal, I feel like my brain wanted to go with idea #1, but glad that my heart choose for idea #2. The overall experience in this task was and up and down, I give it myself a little stress and that's why anxiety happened , where I would overthink I might not do well and can't think of any good idea.
Observation
During the final task, I observed that the research stage is an extremely important one. Research helps a lot to accomplish great results, but it also helps a lot to learn and understand the details in a deeper level. It was during this task that I gained a deeper understanding of graffiti and other aspects of the fashion industry as well.
Findings
It is important for me to realize that typography is not about augmented or prettified writing, but about arranging visualized information on a page. or even product. the most important thing I have learned so far: Typography is just like a style of arrangement or appearance of the typestyle matter. There really lots of things to be consider in this task as well, for instance the font, arrangement ,layout and how the colour should be apply to an application.
Further Reading
1. Grilltype : Punctuation Lesson .
 |
Fig 13.0 X-height of the colon and semicolon |
Punctuation helps with the understanding and correct reading of written text, and is vital to disambiguate the meaning of sentences. A period should be large enough to indicate a pause in the text, but not interfere with the flow of reading. This Instagram post discusses punctuation design. In the same way that overshoot applies to letters with curves, it also applies to punctuation. This has helped me gain a deeper understanding of punctuation features and how slight size differences and overshoot matter.
2. How to Create Consistent branding with typography.
When put together, typography can be an imperative marketing tool for consistent branding. Use typography as a logo, define the of signature font, and build awareness with brand colours. Just like colours convey emotions. fonts do the same. In fact, every single element of brand design—font size, placement, colors, content—impacts how they’re received. In addition to brand identity, brand cohesion relies on synonymous brand materials
