WEEK 6/LECTURE
COMPOSITION 3 : PERSPECTIVE

Fig x 1.0 Types of perspective
Week 6 (06/05/2022)

One-Point Perspective
A 3 dimensional system of perspective that uses one vanishing point. The remaining two dimensions are either parallel or perpendicular to the horizon line.

Two-Point Perspective
A 3 dimensional system of perspective that uses two vanishing points. The one remaining dimension is perpendicular to the line containing the two vanishing point

Three-Point Perspective
A 3 dimensional system of perspective that uses three vanishing points. 2 vanishing point are located on the horizon line, the third vp is located on a vertical that is perpendicular to the horizon line.

Horizon
The apparent intersection of the earth and the sky as seen by an observer. Simply put, this is the "eye level" of the drawing.

Vanishing point
A point in a drawing at which parallel lines drawn in perspective converge.

Parallel
Two lines, two surfaces, or a line and a surface are parallel if they never intersect (meet). They remain a constant distance apart over their entire lengths.

Perpendicular
Two lines, two surfaces, or a line and a surface are perpendicular if they meet at right angles to each other. A right angle is 90 degrees.

Vertical line
An upright line in a drawing perpendicular (at right angles to) the horizon line.

Horizontal line
A line in a drawing parallel to the horizon line.

Diagonal line
A line in a drawing that connects two nonadjacent vertices in a polygon (most commonly a square or rectangle). This one is easy to see later in the tutorial -- but they are a useful class of lines that are used to construct forms in perspective (while not being part of the forms themselves). Again -- you'll see!

Plane
A surface in a drawing. Think of this example -- you have a cylinder. A big cylinder. And the cylinder is actually a stack of pancakes. Each pancake is a cross-section of the stack -- thus each pancake represents a plane within the stack.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 2 - DECIVISE MOEMENT
VISUAL RESEARCH
(About Maze Runner)
While thinking about some ideas in this task 2, my mind automatically popped up few scene about one of my favourite films which is the Maze Runner. I can still remember when I was age of 12 while watching the first season, and now I turned 20 years old yet still hoping them for coming their season 4 of maze runner. There's a total of 3 season (Films) in maze runner which are The Maze Runner (2014) , Maze Runner : The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner : The Death Cure (2018).

Fig 3.0 Maze Runner Series Books by James Dashner

The choice of why choosing Maze Runner as the subject of this tasks seems to be a reminiscence of my childhood, coupled with the fact that I rarely sit down and watch movies of this mysterious science. Not only was the story well drawn, but the background of the film also appealed to me. I bought their book after watching their first season because I couldn't wait to see more stories about Maze Runner.

One of the theme of the maze runner I enjoyed about is growth has no room for complacency. Thomas was the main character who made this theme true. This can be seen how Thomas believes that they can't put in the Glade forever, while few of them believes that they should to survive. The comfort zone may lull he/she with a false sense of security and not going to progress or go anywhere if he/she refuse to challenge themself to make certain changes.

"The maze was only the beginning"

Maze Runner
Genre: Action ; Science Fiction; Mystery
Director by Wess Ball
20th Century Studio

Settings : The Glade is the strange new world into which the main character, Thomas is thrust, like the other Gladers who have been sent there by the creators. Everyone only goal in the Glade is to escape. The glade is a meadow the size of several football fields surrounded by gigantic walls that fall in the middle of a vast maze formed by walls of ivy. No escape, just the maze and the big & tall walls. While the Scorch is a prominent location in season 2 of maze runner. The Scorch is a barren desert, with red, rocky terrain and natural land informations, some of which are still fertile. It is also an abandoned cities still stand, albeit heavily charred from the sun leaving a burnt cobbled landscape. The Last City appears in the Death Cure. It is seemingly the last major settlement of humanity following the Sun Flares and the subsequent Flare Pandemic.

SKETCHES
2. Colour Palette/ Tone

Fig 4.0 Poster Idea from Maze Runner
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

I try to search some inspiration idea , here are the fews one that I loved from the official release poster of Maze Runner. There's minimalist yet eye-catching poster really caught the attention to the eye. Even with their colour tone of the poster.

Fig 4.1 Colour Palette Idea from Maze Runner
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

My inspiration for this task came from a scene from the scorch trails where the sunset scene focuses on their silhouettes and abandoned cities. Additionally, I take note of their colour palette they used with the eye dropper tool.

3. Characters

Fig 4.2 First Attempt - Experiment
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

The first attempt, I was not completely sure what kind of style and idea I was going to use, so I decided to use the tracing method and the chiaroscuro I had learned from Mr Hafiz. I used one of the Maze Runner main characters, Thomas as my reference and the result turns really fun and cool.

Fig 4.4 Second Attempt - Final Sketches Idea
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

Following the brainstorming process, here is the sketch I decided to go with, it's to achieve a kind of "double exposure"effect. The idea will be about the silhouette of Thomas from the scene of movie with the  background of the giant wall or the cities from the scorch trials scene.

DIGITIZATION
1.Brightness / Curves

Fig 4.5 Adjusting the brightness
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

Week 8 (20/05/2022)

I used 2 photos about the main characters ,Thomas and use Photoshop brightness and curves tool to help me in step-by-step adjusting the brightness to get the silhouette I want to achieve for easy to trace him out. Below are the progress and results :

2. Illustrates / Tracing

Maze Runner. The 2 things I want to emphasize are both a maze and a runner. The silhouette are the main characters of this poster. As the first step, I trace the silhouette using the pen tool and then add the shadow details.

Week 8 (20/05/2022)

In my previous layouts, I noticed the colors were too saturated and so I decided to try a less saturated color scheme. In addition, I simplified the layouts by not adding a lot of background and to keep it plain. Both of these layouts were the ones that I liked about them, which made it slightly difficult to choose which to go with as my final outcome.

4. GIF / Animation

Fig 7.0 Idea in GIF - Spinning Wheel
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

To make the animation GIF, I look at other animated gifs for reference. Being a complete beginner to animation, my idea was simple and straight-forward: make the silhouette run and make the maze spin. I followed the steps in making the gif where we learn from Mr Hafiz during tutorial class and here are the progress :

Fig 7.4 SecondAttempt in GIF
Week 8 (20/05/2022)

Neither the first nor the second attempt was not the best result. The first time I tried, the walking posture was unnatural and the timeline was wrong. It took me some time to adjust the pose and use the timeline in Illustrator because I'm not used to it. But soon enough, I felt myself getting better, and I decided to try a few more times to separate the silhouette from the maze time frame.

Week 8 (20/05/2022)

With the powerful lesson from maze runner. "Don't look back and wish otherwise." It will only be counterintuitive to the situation and stay focus from dealing with the now. No one who spent a night in the maze survived. -----until Thomas came into the picture. He not only survived the night, but managed to defeat one of the Grievers hunting him down.

REFLECTION
Surprisingly, the task left me unstressed but enjoyed , it was really fun  to do this with one of my favourite movies. While doing more research on the film, it does bring back a lot of memories together with Maze Runner. This task helps me develop visual and aesthetic awareness. The tracking method does help me visualize more good ideas, but one of my goals is to slowly get better and I can actually draw them without tracing, which takes a bit more practices. I love how this module helps a lot by gaining new skills, like trying out different adobe software when making gifs. Defiantly, I think that learning new skills is never wasted. It's always worth it for  exploring new things always makes you curious, and that curiosity takes you to a level you didn't expected. It has also helped me build confidence and rationalize opinions. This will ultimately help to be a good decision maker in future task or in real-life situations.
