LECTURE
Week 2 (31/03/2022)
(Introduction to basic composition)

FOCAL POINT
Fig 1.0 Use of focal point in Poster Design

Find your focus. A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point which helps the viewer eyes naturally settle on the important of the design. Focal points are areas of interest, emphasis or difference within a composition that capture and hold the viewer's attention.

SCALE

Fig 2.0 Example Scale in Poster Design

Scale refers to the relative size of a design element in comparison to another element that can draws the attention to design elements and to create emphasis as well. Scale relationships can be conceptual a large element might be more important scale is used to represent precise difference and quantity.

HIERARCHY
Fig 3.0 Example of Hierarchy Poster Design

Hierarchy helps users to navigate the design, signals the importance of different elements
It helps to communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements

WHITE SPACE

Fig 4.0 Use of white space in Poster Design

White space known as "empty space" to balance up the main focus of a composition.

BALANCE
Fig 5.0 Example of balance in poster design

Proportions within a design that distributes elements equally. Symmetry is a perfect balance, while asymmetry creates tension

RULE OF THIRDS

Fig 6.0 Ratio of rule of third

Fig 6.1 Example of Rule of third in Poster

The rule of thirds states that if you take a canvas and divide it into three equally sized horizontal sections and three equally sized vertical sections, the resulting grids provides a sort of "roadmap" that helps to choose where to place the design elements.

Using the rule of thirds will enable to place design elements in the right way, so the overall composition communicate the right message and create a visual interest.

GOLDEN RATIO

Fig 7.0 Golden Ratio

Fig 7.1 Example of Golden Ratio poster design

Golden Ratio boils down to aesthetics , creating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion. When applied to design, the Golden Ratio provides a sense of artistry.

It is the number used when two quantities are divided in a way that their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger one of the two quantities. That number is 1.618, also called Phi

LASSO TOOL
The Lasso Tool allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.

When you click on the Lasso Tool from the Toolbar, you will see three different tool options:

Fig 8.1 Lasso Tool In Photoshop

Lasso Tool - Freeform selection outline around an object
Polygonal Lasso - Surround it with polygonal , straight-edged selection outline
Magnetic Lasso - Snaps the selection outline to the edges of the object as the mouse cursor around it

PEN TOOL
Pen tool is a versatile tool in Photoshop that can be used to create extremely precise shapes and paths, using manually placed anchor points. The pen tool is the way that you add these points and the way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how they will look.

Fig 8.2 Pen Tool in Photoshop

Pen tool (P) - It allows to draw extremely precise path , vector shapes or selection.
Freeform Pen Tool - The Freeform Pen Tool allows you to draw freehand paths or shapes. Anchor points are automatically added to the path as you draw.
Add Anchor Point Tool - Add Anchor Point Tool to add additional anchor points along a path.
Delete Anchor Point Tool - Click on an existing anchor point along a path with the Delete Anchor Point Tool to remove the point.
Convert Point Tool - On a path, click on a smooth anchor point with the Convert Point Tool to convert it to a corner point. Click a corner point to convert it to a smooth point)

Layering
Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. Able to use each layer without affecting another one to make adjustments. Together they can be form into one final image.

Fig 8.3 Types of laters In Photoshop

TYPE LAYER -The same as an image layer, except this layer contains type that can be edited (Colour, font or size)
ADJUSTMENT LAYER -An adjustment layer is changing the colour or tone of all the layers underneath it. To only affect the layer directly underneath it
LAYER STYLE -An effect has been applied. Click the eye to turn it off. Double click "effects" to open the Layer style options
LAYER MASK - Allows to paint on the mask to show and reveal portions of the image
SMART OBJECT -A special type of layer that is actually a container that can hold multiple layers vectors for illustrator, raw files, video, 3D or many other types of object.

Fig 8.4 Layers In Photoshop

In Photoshop, it can do a lot more with layers. It can delete a layer by clicking on it and dragging it to the little trash can at the bottom of the panel. We also can also duplicate a layer by dragging it down to the icon beside the trash can, which creates a copy of that layer. A layer can be moved by clicking on it and dragging it up or down the stack.

Week 4 - Lecture

(Introduction to Photoshop 3)

The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add colour and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels. With the adjustment layers, you can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient, and is an absolute must-know.

Fig 9.0 Adjustment in Photoshop
BRIGHTNESS / CONTRAST
Brightness / Contrast makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image. The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the Contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image
LEVEL
Levels modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.
EXPOSURE
Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image, Offset adjusts the mid tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only.

CURVES
Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image.
SELECTIVE COLOUR
The Selective Colour adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary colour without
modifying the other primary colour in your image.

TASK

Project 1A :COLLAGE

Design elements (5 Marks)
Composition (5 Marks)
Submission: WEEK 3

Fig 10.0 Materials for Collage
Week 3 (07/04/2022)

Here's the material I have for the physical collage project. I find it useful as I have a habit in collecting items like collecting magazines, books, brochure and poster. There's materials I have are magazine from Uniqlo and Dior and few brochure from Ikea.

PRE-COMPOSITION 1
Fig 10.1 Pre-composition 1
Week 3 (07/04/2022)

The first composition idea came from a magazine cover. I usually like to observe at magazine cover layouts. I centre the girl first for emphasis, where the eyes can naturally focus on the important parts of the collage. There's also a caption about women at the top of the girls, and I've added the phrase "feel inspired" next to it. The overall feel of this pre-composition 1 gives me a sense of being occupied , there's no empty space and there's a lot to see around the collage.

PRE-COMPOSITION 2

Fig 10.3 Pre-composition 2
"MOTIVATION"

While making the second pre-composition where I try using the rule of thirds. It eventually let me think about a boy where he is full of dream, goals, desire and lots of good motivation about his future. Reminds me of a phrase "Today is your opportunity build the tomorrow you want."  So set your motion ! Ready set go !

PRE-COMPOSITION 3

Fig 10.4 Pre-composition 3

Lastly with the pre-composition #3. My idea was about minimalist. Sky , cloud and building as the background and there's a couple who don't feel like tearing apart. They just want to make more memorable memories together.

FINAL PHYSICAL COLLAGE

Project 1B :DIGITAL COLLAGE
PRE-COMPOSITION 1

Fig 10.6 Elements #1

Fig 10.7 Elements #2

There were a set of elements provided by Mr Martin where we can use all the elements for our digital collage. The main thing I learned and love about is to “Be creative and have fun”. There’s no right or wrong, so just be creative and feel free to be imaginative with the collage.

PRE-COMPOSITION 1

Fig 10.8 Pre-composition 1

The pre-composition 1 was my very first attempt doing the collage using the Photoshop. I selected the old factory building and mountain as my background. I also added the texture to create a surreal kind of landscape feeling. Besides , theres also a big shark and a fencer who was ready for the battle.

FINAL DIGITAL COLLAGE

Fig 12.0 Progress in Final Digital Collage
Week 4 , (14/04/2022)

I was not satisfied with the few outcome of the pre-composition. Everything seems fine but it still seems like lack of something else. So , I decided to mix and match between the ideas of pre-composition 1 and 3 as my final digital collage.
I do make some changes by adjusting the elements and also their size. Not only that I also use the tools that I learn during week 4 practical class which is about the adjustment filters.

Week 4 , (14/04/2022)

Let's Explore ! In a world that is super chaotic and full of responsibilities, life is supposed to be a series of adventures. We're all supposed to be explorers , live your life and fill your life with adventures and memorable moments. Life is full of adventurous that means ups and downs. Believe in yourself , stay hungry and stay foolish.

FEEDBACKS

From the physical collage feedbacks from sir , he told that pre-composition 1 and 2 are great, both looks like have different meaning and stories. Sir love the second collage where there is some "flow" inside the composition. In the end, the choices are up to myself where I can choose between 1 and 2 as my final outcome. My classmates mostly love about pre-composition 1.

REFLECTIONS

I think that this course just feel like home , its feel warm and comfortable. Mr Martin is very down to earth and I personally really enjoyed this module, as I'm having a basic skills with Photoshop , I find it more fun while doing all the practical exercises and with this project 1 which are something I won't really do when  personally when using Photoshop. One of the things I still remember was Mr Martin told me "PeiYun , you're going to be a good designer soon" It like a really good motivation and boost up my confidence for next coming project.
